A Message to Garcia is an inspirational essay written by Elbert Hubbard. It was originally published as a filler without a title in the March, 1899 issue of the Philistine magazine which he edited, but was quickly reprinted as a pamphlet and a book. It was wildly popular, selling over 40 million copies, and being translated into 37 languages. It also became a well-known allusion in American popular and business culture.
The essay celebrates the initiative of a soldier who is assigned and accomplishes a daunting mission. He asks no questions, makes no objections, requests no help, but accomplishes the mission. The essay exhorts the reader to apply this attitude to his own life as an avenue to success. Its wide popularity reflected the general appeal of self-reliance and energetic problem solving in American culture. Its "don't ask questions, get the job done" message was often used by business leaders as a motivational message to their employees.

Its an amazing tale of resourcefulness, and as an entrepreneur employing many people throughout the years, I'm very sympathetic to the sentiment in this book. I'm sure such sympathies have driven the massive distribution of the book as frustrated (or inspired) managers and executives distributed this to every employee they could imagine. That being said, I can't imagine it had that much of an impact on the target audience. That's great that this extremely talented soldier was able to perform this amazing feat with (the book implies) virtually no help or instruction, but even if entirely accurate, what does it mean for the targeted reader? Great, I would like to be like this soldier, I would also like to be like Ted Williams, or Albert Einstein.Personally, I would never give this to an employee, partially because of the tone, and partially because it just seems to lay fault almost solely on the employee. I'm of the Dale Carnegie school of thought that criticism doesn't work, and this book feels like a critical rant to me.

Fun to read that you had to read many year ago - a classic
very interesting reading and history
This is a preachy thome, and not at all LT Rowan's story. I feel cheated. A waste of my money.
I am thoroughly inspired by the words in this message! I had no idea what it was going to be but I am glad I read it. I needed Divine, Heavenly Intervention and THIS book gave me hope to help my Team move forward. Written so Many years ago and yet it is shameful to say that it is still true today!
A Message to Garcia - i found this short story to be inspirational and motivational The commitment and attitude of the "soldier" tackling the task is unbelievable. As an Executive in business - you could only hope for staff with this type of passion and commitment not o mention the initiative used to get the task done.
You would not be doing yourself or your staff justice if you do not circulate this story to everyone within your company?
The message is one the does not resonate so well in an era where people are more likely to talk about their rights and comforts than their responsibilities. But it still matters to me if a task - any worthwhile task - needs to be done and you need people you can count on to get it done. I want people around me who can get the that job done - not those expecting someone else to do it.
One of the finest examples ever written of the proper ways of living life.. This book should be used by every country in the world,
to represent the TRUE words of wisdom to use as a guide to the attitudes, behaviors, goals, respect,
that all people should live by. I highly recommend this book to everyone. If one does not
believe in the wisdom of the words in the bible.....then use the words of wisdom in THIS BOOK
to plan out one's life. Truly my favorite book in the world.
