Plats du Jour, the girl & the fig's Journey Through the Seasons in Wine Country truly is a journey through the seasons showcasing over 125 full color photographs and stories providing intimate glimpses of the local farmers and purveyors who partner with the girl & the fig. Based on the "Plats du Jour" concept at the girl & the fig weekly rotating 3-course menus, these are restaurant recipes that have been tailored for the home cook with easy ingredient substitutions, wine pairings and cheese platter suggestions and more.

The Plats du Jour menus are an ingredient tour through the year. The 28 three-course menus are arranged by season, and include a cheese pairing for each menu. While there are set menus, there is plenty of opportunity for creativity. Readers can mix and match the recipes from various menus according to taste, which allows for creativity and versatility. The menus are a guide to plan ahead for a dinner party or family gathering. All of the recipes serve six people, allowing for a weekend dinner party or a weekday dinner with a day or two of delicious leftovers. This fits Sondra Bernstein's philosophy that friends and family commune best over a great meal.

My wife and I just visited Sonoma, CA at the end of May 2012, where we happened upon The Girl & The Fig through Yelp reviews. We enjoyed the experience enough that we drove my parents back from the bay area a week later. I noticed the book while we were at the restaurant but didn't buy it at the time. I previously purchased a restaurant cookbook at the Herb Farm near Seattle. The Herb Farm cookbook is one of my favorites, so I was excited to look up this book when we got home from California. I've had Plats du Jour now for a few weeks and absolutely love it. This is a pretty substantial book. Though a lot of it is stories, history, and pictures, it is still packed with recipes. We were thrilled to find the restaurant's lavender creme brulee recipe. Personally, I think this book is a steal, especially at its price.

The only negative thing I have to say is that I had a hard time figuring out what "blended oil" was, called for in many of the recipes. This can mean so many things and often refers to generic vegetable oil. Later, I found the explanation on page 18. I tend to be a person who casually flips through a cookbook and the recipes don't direct the reader to page 18. In fact, "Oil, blended" is in the glossary but it refers the reader to page 311 where it's not mentioned once. Not a big deal, the rest of the book is clear and well laid out, and I eventually found what I was looking for.

Lush photos, unique recipes, "meet the producers" stories about the local suppliers make for a good read and a clear window into the Sonoma food scene.
Great cookbook and wonderful stories...
Visited the restaurants numerous times. Great to have some recipes.
Only tried four or five in the first month of ownership, but all have been well received.
Well done, well illustrated. Highly recommend.
Great recipes with lovely back stories on artisan producers and more!
The pictures are beautiful and with each section, there are cocktails included. I originally saw this in Napa Valley at a winery for the full price then came home and ordered it from my trusted and less than half the price!
Just returned home from a trip to Sonoma, now after reading this I want to go back and see some of the farms and shops they feature in the book. Not just a cookbook, this is a fantastic gift too!,
I found this book very approachable. I've made a couple of things out of it so far and they have been very good. This book, like Sondra's last book, are safe bets for trying new dishes when friends are coming over for dinner. I like to flag the recipies I want to try when I get a new cookbook. With this one, almost every page is flagged! I can't wait to try more. It's book is also beautiful - great pictures and wonderful tips throughout the book.
